Nakuru County Assembly Speaker survives impeachment motion

Nakuru County Assembly Speaker Eng. Joel Maina Kairo on Wednesday afternoon survived an impeachment motion against him.

The motion, which was brought to the House by Biashara Ward MCA Peter Njoroge Nyaguthii, failed to achieve the 75% support threshold.

45 MCAs voted in support of the motion while 32 voted against it. The motion required the support of 59 MCAs in order to sail through.

Deputy Speaker Samuel Tonui did not vote by virtue of being the presiding speaker.

Nakuru County Assembly has 78 MCAs; 55 elected and 23 nominated.

Voting by way of secret ballot started after a daylong heated debate as members of the public watched in anxiety from the gallery.

MCA Njoroge had sighted denial of bench marking trips, incompetence and abuse of office as some of the wrong doings of the speaker.

Speaker Kairo was carried shoulder high by members of the public who broke into song and dance as the results were announced.

They said it was time for elected leaders to deliver to the electorate instead of engaging in unnecessary fights.

While saying he is happy and ready to continue serving as the second speaker of the Nakuru County Assembly, Kairo said he will soon be convening a Kamukunji to unite the divided House.

Reports indicate that, as at last weekend, Njoroge had the support of 60 MCAs until Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika and Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama invited a section of the MCAs for a reconciliation meeting.

Before his election as the county’s second speaker, Kairo served as the CEC for roads in former Governor Kinuthia Mbugua’s administration.
