Nakuru County nurses go on strike

Nakuru County public health nurses under the Kenya National Union of Nurses have downed their tools over unfulfilled promotion promises by the county government.

According to the nurses, who assembled outside the Nakuru Level Five Hospital, the government has been ignoring their petitions for promotion.

In July 2015, the nurses were asked to resume office after they were issued a return to work formula that was signed before the labour office where they were promised promotions before the end of January 2016.

The agreement letter was served to the county executive committee member for health, Dr Kabii Mungai, and his chief officer Dr Samuel Mwaura.

“We have been sending letters through our officials to the county government but the county officials have not responded to any of our requests,” said Maureen Kerauni from Bahati Sub-County Hospital, who also raised concern over poor staffing and lack of equipment especially in the rural areas.

The nurses complained that the county officials have instead been tossing them from one person to another without resolving the issues brought forward.

“They have taken so long to offer the promotions and those that have received the promotions have not received their full arrears,” said Dickson Aruasa, a nurse from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, over 1200 nurses from Nakuru County vowed that they would not resume duty until their efforts to get promotions as per the 2015 agreement bear fruit.

The strike has paralysed services at the Nakuru Level Five Hospital, leading to a health crisis in the region, as patients remain stranded.
