Nakuru County residents decry piling garbage

The County Government of Nakuru is on the spot over uncollected heaps of garbage that have reportedly been piling up at Pinkam roundabout, Nakuru Top Market and at Nyayo Gardens.

According to members of the public, the garbage has remained uncollected for over three days.

“This is the fourth day the garbage has been piling up. We are concerned because of the foul smell and the flies hovering around people and in the food joints,” said Benson Muiruri who is a bodaboda operator at Pinkam.

Muiruri and other workers called on the government to act fast and clear the mess to protect members of the public from contracting diseases.

They also complained of human and traffic congestion since matatu operators have had to shift their terminus to a place along the road to avoid the garbage.

When contacted for comment, Nakuru county executive member for environment, Richard Rop, said that the county government would solve the problem.

“The delay by the National Treasury to release the county funds has stalled many projects in the county, but the issue will be addressed as soon as possible,” he said.

Casual workers in Nakuru went on strike late August over lack of payment for seven months.

Rop added that the county government is considerate to the casual workers’ plight, adding that they would receive their dues as soon as the county funds are released.
