Nakuru County to reclaim Lake Naivasha land

Nakuru County government has announced plans to reclaim all blocked corridors and riparian land around Lake Naivasha.

The county has formed a committee to oversee the exercise that is expected to kick off in two weeks according to Governor Kinuthia Mbugua.

The governor said that no one would be spared in the exercise that would target opening of all the 14 closed corridors around the lake.

“Whenever the lake levels recede, some people are keen to grab the riparian land and they will be the first victims when the exercise of reclaiming the land begins,” he stated.

Mbugua ruled out compensation or negotiation adding that the county had ample evidence and documentation identifying the public beaches, corridors and riparian land.

The governor was speaking in Karagita beach in Lake Naivasha when he supervised the search for the missing body of one of the three fishermen who drowned last week.

While consoling the affected families, Mbugua said his government would supply all the fishermen in the four landing beaches in the lake with life jackets.

“It is a sad day that we have lost three young people who were searching for their daily bread and navy divers will join in the search for the missing fisherman,” he promised.

He at the same time added that the county would sponsor the full training of 24 youths from the area in disaster management.

The chairman of Lake Naivasha Boat Owners Association David Kilo admitted that many of the fishermen did not have life jackets.

He termed the incident as the worst to have occurred in the lake and challenged the government to urgently resolve the issue of one of the corridors leading to the popular public beach.

“We are always being threatened by some investors that this corridor will be closed and we are asking the county government to solve this impasse once and for all,” he stated.
