Nakuru Governor, NLC order those on riparian land to move

The National Land Commission (NLC) and the Nakuru County Government have warned that those who have encroached on riparian land in Naivasha must vacate.

During a meeting held on Friday, Dr. Muhammud Swazuri, the NLC chair and Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui indicated that a demolition exercise has been planned for buildings constructed on riparian land.

They added that the move is in line with the recent directive from the President.

According to the Governor, floods experienced during the onset of long rains were as a result of encroachment of riparian land.

Mr. Kinyanjui said that the County Government will work closely with NLC to ensure that all grabbed public land is reclaimed.

“The County Government will offer assistance to the commission to ensure that land for settlement schemes as well as companies that purchase land in Nakuru follow the right procedure,” he said.

On his part Dr. Swazuri said that the commission has classified the land into two types: Class One and Class Two.

Under Class One are those whose titles will be released in 60 days while Class Two will be issued within 30 days.

Swazuri said this includes land on which Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) were resettled and the Solai Nyakinyua farm.

It also includes various Agriculture Development Corporation (ADC) farms including the controversial Oljorai in Gilgil, Swazuri added.

He reiterated that NLC is committed to repossessing grabbed public land and in cases where private individuals moved to court, the agency will table evidence that proves rightful ownership.
