Nakuru residents block road over alleged land grabbing

Residents of Mutegi Estate in Nakuru County on Saturday morning blocked the Nakuru-Elementaita Road calling on the government to save their situation after a private developer laid claim on their land.

It took the intervention of police to remove barricades the residents had placed in the middle of the road forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

Despite holding title deeds for individual parcels on the ten-acre farm since 1996, the residents say they had received a notice to vacate a place they have called home for over two decades.

The residents faulted the Nakuru district land registrar for postponing the problem every time they seek assistance giving the developer a chance to create tension among them.

However, according to Wahome Werugia, land surveyors who conducted a fact-finding mission, it was not possible to re-establish the boundaries between two blocks of land whose boundaries have been altered during the initial subdivision.

Settling the dispute may take longer than expected as the residents have already developed the area with permanent residential and business premises.

The residents have now called on top officials in the Ministry of Lands and the National Lands Commission to intervene.
