Nakuru residents protest bad state of roads

More than 400 residents of Kiangai village in Engoshura, Nakuru County held peaceful demonstrations Tuesday, September 27 morning protesting the poor state of roads in the area.

Carrying twigs and placards, the residents complained that the main Mawanga – Kiangai road is now impassable following what they termed as neglect by the county government.

The demonstrators accused area Member of Parliament, Kimani Ngunjiri, and Kiamina Ward Member of County Assembly, Samuel Kamau, of failing in their responsibilities to repair the road.

“We are tired of these two leaders sending us back and forth and shifting blame. We chose them to act as intermediaries between us and the government but they are not doing their work,” a protester, Ken Murima, lamented.

Another resident, Anne Wanjiru, said that the contractor who repaired the road did not create trenches to drain water during the rainy season thereby leading to the damage.

“When people get sick and need treatment, they cannot access the nearby Engoshura Dispensary easily because of the bad road. Most of the time we are woken up in the wee hours of the night to help push vehicles that are stuck on the road,” decried Ms Wanjiru.

Attempts by Bahati CDF chairman Anthony Njui to address the demonstrators bore no fruits as they accused him of being part of a ‘rotten system’.

When reached for comment by Citizen Digital, Njui insisted that the responsibility of road maintenance was a prerogative of the county government, adding that Governor Kinuthia Mbugua should be responsible for the mess.
