Nakuru school closed after riot over student’s death

A secondary school in Rongai, Nakuru County has been closed after students threatened to raze the institution following the death of one of their colleagues.

Over 1,000 students of Anthinai Day Secondary School were sent home on Wednesday and ongoing examinations suspended.

Confirming the incident, Rongai Sub-county Director of Education Janet Ochieng said the students had been sent home to cool their tempers.

Ms. Ochieng said the Form Four students would continue their pre-mock exams after the Easter holiday.

The student who died had been swimming in the Molo River at Daraja Mungu area when he drowned.

According to Makongeni Chief Towett, the deceased and two other students had gone to swim at around 4.30pm on Tuesday. Efforts to save him proved futile as the currents were too strong..

The body of the student has been moved to the mortuary at Eldama Ravine Sub-County Hospital.
