Nakurus Gilanis Supermarket shut down over safety issues

Nakuru County Government on Thursday shut down Gilani’s Supermarket saying the building which houses the establishment is unsafe for habitation.

Lands, Physical Planning and Housing County Executive Committee (CEC) member Francis Mwangi made the announcement after a tour of the building situated in Nakuru town.

The CEC was flanked by Gilani’s Director Shamsher Gilani as well as the National Construction Authority during the inspection.

According to Mr. Mwangi, the building which houses the supermarket — said to be the oldest supermarket in the county — is dilapidated and not fit for carrying out a business.

“We have concern for the members of the public, and for us to be sure that they (public) are safe, we issued a closure notice and we’re only going to consider reopening this building when we get the reports from relevant authorities confirming that the building is safe for occupation,” he said.
