Nana Akufo-Addo winsGhanapresidential vote

Ghana’s main opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo won the national election held on Wednesday (December 7), defeating President John Mahama, the head of the Electoral Commission said on Friday (December 9).

The results were announced moments after Ghana’s outgoing president John Mahama conceded defeat in a phone call.

“It is my duty and my privilege to declare Nana Akufo-Addo as the President-elect of Ghana,” Electoral Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Osei told a news conference in the capital.

The concession quelled tensions at the end of a day in which independent voting tallies showing an Akufo-Addo victory in the presidential and parliamentary election had been broadly accepted, but there were no official results.

Supporters of Akufo-Addo’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) broke into cheers and dancing in the country’s Ashanti region when news of the call broke on local media.
