Nandi county advertises nurses posts over strike

The Nandi County Government has advertised 191 posts for nurses following a two-week long nurses’ strike that has paralysed operations in public health facilities across the county.

“This is one of several scenarios the county government is ready to implement since the nurses have insisted on continuing with the strike, bringing health services in all County hospitals to almost a complete halt,” revealed the source who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A statement from the Health County Executive Mathew Rotich Thursday, indicated that the strike, which has entered its second week, is illegal adding that the management was set to advertise new positions for health workers from 21st of April.

On Wednesday, negotiations between health workers and Nandi County Labour Office failed to take place after the county government boycotted the meeting.

“The striking workers will face sack if they fail to comply with notice of returning to work,” Rotich had warned.

Retired Rev. Elijah Kiprotich Yego has slammed Nandi leaders for turning their back on issues of health.

He also urged leaders to convene a crisis meeting and solve the stalemate as it is ironical for leaders to participate in national prayers yet people were dying in Nandi.

The nurses are demanding a pay rise, promotions and better working conditions.
