Nandi County, health workers talks fail to kick off

A health crisis looms in Nandi County after talks between the nurses’ union, labour office and county government failed to take place.

The Labour office was to act as an arbitrator between the county government and health workers and iron out issues raised by the health workers who have since gone on strike paralyzing the public health sector.

The meeting was scheduled to take place in Nandi Hills town but did not transpire as county government officials boycotted the talks.

According to the national chairman Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), John Bii, health workers will stay put until the County Government of Nandi resolve their grievances touching on promotions and payment of salary arrears.

The County Government further asserted that they failed to produce promotion letters on grounds that the health workers did not meet requirements of having computer certificate.

Bii also encouraged health workers to stay put and that they should not allow their rights to be violated.

Nandi County CEC in charge of Health and Sanitation Mr. Mathew Rotich maintained that the strike is illegal and that stark measures and disciplinary action will be taken against the striking health workers.

It was also averred that nurses must report to the work stations with immediate effect.
