Nandi IDPs say yet to be compensated

Hundreds of Internally Displaced People (IDP’s) gathered at Maraba market in Tinderet on Thursday, November, 10 to pressure the government to remember them and speed up the compensation process.

IDP’s National Board Member, Margaret GathoniWangoto, said that over 5,000 integrated IDPs in Nandi County are in need of compensation.

She urged the government to speed up the resettlement of the group comprising of Post Election Violence victims and forest evictees in Nandi and other parts of the country.

She said that “a section of forest evictees have already received money and living well.”

Hellen Ochabedi Kipkurere, a forest evictee and a victim of the 2007-2008 post poll chaos said that they have not received any compensation from the government.

Another victim, James Lagat, however, argued that a section of leaders have been moving around politicizing the issue of IDPs, adding that the Jubilee government had done much to resettle them.

The IDP’s maintained that displaced persons in Nandi have to be compensated for the suffering and losses they incurred during the chaos and forest evictions.
