Nandi leaders demand release of Ksh90m education bursary funds

Leaders in Nandi County have asked the county government, under the leadership of Governor Cleophas Lagat, to release the education bursary that was set aside to help the bright and needy students.

Speaking during his resignation, John Kiplagat Lempaa, who served as the personal assistant of the county executive commissioner in charge of education in the year 2013, said that in the year 2013 they gave out bursary funds and since that time no bursary funds have been allocated to the students.

“Recently the governor announced that he has launched Ksh60 million but there is only Ksh30 million in the account, we want the governor to explain to us where the Ksh60 million is”, posed Lempaa.

Lempaa accused the governor of failing the county, pointing to a recent report where the county was ranked position 46 in the country in terms of development.

Speaking in another function, Tinderet MCA Kipkurui Chepkwony said they have been setting aside money for the bursary for the past three years but they have not issued the bursary to the beneficiaries.

The MCA blamed the committee set up y the governor to oversee the process for the delay, adding that it was time to release the money so that Nandi County students can go to school before January 15^th as instructed by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

Kiprotich Charargei, Chairman of Nandi County Transparency Group, issued an ultimatum to the county government to release the funds within the next 14 days, failure to which he would move to court.

This comes amid several allegations regarding the misuse and misappropriation of funds by several county governments.
