Nandi Police destroy counterfeit cigarettes

Police in Nandi destroyed counterfeit cigarettes of an estimated worth of Ksh 250,000 following an order by the Kapsabet Law Court.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Nandi Central OCPD Joaquim Mecha said the cigarettes were intercepted by police at Kaimosi and are believed to have been smuggled into the country.

“The cigarettes that we destroyed following a court order had international trademarks, and according to our intelligence, they were being taken to Western Kenya,” said Mecha.

Mecha warned cigarette smokers to be on the lookout since the products have not been certified by Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and could have adverse side effects.

Mecha said the government is losing millions of shillings in taxes through illegal importation of counterfeit products.

The peddlers of the of the cigarettes were arrested and will be arraigned in court.

According to the Tobacco Atlas, more than 6,000 Kenyans are killed every year by tobacco-caused diseases, while more than 220,000 children and more than 2,737,000 adults continue to use tobacco daily.
