Nanyuki businessman killed in drive-by shooting

A prominent businessman in Nanyuki has been shot dead by unknown assailants at Marura area, in Sweetwater, Laikipia County.

Festus Gakuo, 40, was on Sunday night shot four times by suspects aboard a moving vehicle and who thereafter sped off, leaving him for dead.

Witnesses said the vehicle appeared at the businessman’s shop while he was attending to a client and the suspects sprayed him with bullets as they drove by.

Residents are now calling upon the government to begin investigations into the incident, citing rising cases of assassinations in the area and accusing the security apparatus of failing to act accordingly.

They now want the nearby Ol Pejeta Conservancy to provide CCTV footage next to the spot where the businessman was killed for proper investigations to take place.

Nancy Wanjugu, a resident, said she knew Gakuo as a man of the people who would even step in to offer aid in burials and meetings besides providing the people with transport means when necessary.

She mourned the late businessman saying the area has lost a great man, adding that investigative agencies should move with speed to determine the motive for the murder and bring the killers to book.

The area residents are also demanding for a police post to be constructed in the area.
