Narok County orders closure of 10 Camps in Maasai Mara Game Reserve
Narok County Government has ordered for immediate closure of ten camps in Maasai Mara game reserve, saying they were illegally constructed along maternity paths of lions.
A letter dated 23rd May, 2016 and addressed to The Chief Park Warden, the County Deputy Director of Security stated that the directive commences immediately under Operation Funga Camps.
According to the letter, the camps shall only open with a lawful command to do so or by authorities as signed by the Narok County Deputy Director of Security, Benjamin Ole Tina.
Camps which have been ordered to close include: Ashnil, Entim, Matira, Naibor, Rekero, Alex Walker, Hammerkop, Mara Crossing, Mara Eden and Mara Crossing Camp.
Two balloon camps namely Adventure Aloft Ball on Safaris and Hot Air Balloon Safaris Entim are also set to be closed.
The controversial decision comes in the wake of expectant arrival season for international, regional and local tourists in the industry.
A copy of the letter has been sent to the Executive Tourism and Office of Narok County Governor.
