Narok County waives hospital bills for Siyabei accident survivors

The Narok County Government will waive hospital bills for victims of the Siyabei river accident that left 19 people dead and more than 40 others injured, Governor Samuel Ole Tunai has said.

Speaking after visiting the survivors at Narok Referral Hospital, the county boss described the horrific accident as a sad one, adding that he will provide ambulances to transport those seeking further treatment elsewhere.

He called on motorists to observe traffic rules and move at reasonable speed while plying the busy Narok highway.

Tunai said that plans were underway to construct two bypasses from Siyabei Southern bypass and Northern bypass in addition to two lanes from Maai-Mahiu to Narok town to ease traffic.

County Executive for Health and Sanitation Sarah Mpeti commended the medics at the hospital for working tirelessly to save the lives of survivors.

Confirming the Tuesday afternoon accident, Narok County Commissioner George Natembeya said the 63-seater bus was heading to Nairobi from Kendu Bay in Homa Bay County.

According to eye witnesses, the driver of the bus was trying to avoid a construction lorry which was joining the road when he lost control of the vehicle and plunged into the river.

Seventeen passengers were immediately confirmed dead with two others succumbing to their injuries in hospital

Stephen Kibet, the driver of the truck that was allegedly obstructing the passenger bus was on Wednesday arraigned at a Narok Court before Senior Resident Magistrate Titus Gesora.

The Deputy Public Prosecution David Mwangi , however, sought for 10 days to allow for further investigation into the matter.
