Narok, Njoro clashes are a distraction over Mau evictions: Tobiko

Environment CS Keriako Tobiko has condemned the Narok and Njoro clashes saying they are meant to distract the government from proceeding with the Mau evictions.

His statement comes just hours after 11 people were arrested and detained at Njoro Police Headquarters over allegations of incitement.

“Why are the clashes coming up just after the first evictions? Any title deed in Mau is just but a piece of paper,” Tobiko said on Saturday.

He was speaking during the memorial of ex-Cabinet minister William ole Ntimama on Saturday.

Tobiko maintained that the second phase of the evictions will continue as planned irrespective of those against it.

The Environment CS further reiterated that there would be no compensation for those who will be evicted.

On his part, Senator for Narok County Ledama Olekina urged the government to ensure that the evictions are conducted in a humane manner.

“We want to tell Tobiko to ensure evictions is done wholesome…doing it selectively is bringing tension. We are giving 300 iron sheets for the burnt homes and we want Mau Forest fenced to avoid similar incidences in future,” he said.

Interior CAS Patrick Ntutu however said the Devolution Ministry will be in Narok on Wednesday to construct homes for those affected.

On Saturday, dignitaries from far and wide arrived at Emtoyi village in Narok North in memory of William ole Ntimama who died two years ago.

Among those present at the ceremony were former Tanzanian Prime Minister Edward Lowasa, Governors Samuel Ole Tunai (Narok), Joseph Ole Lenku (Kajiado), ACK Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit and others.
