NASA: August 8 elections must go on as planned

A section of National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders have rubbished claims by Jubilee leaders that the opposition coalition is not ready for the August 8 elections.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, on Sunday, July 9 cautioned the Judiciary not to aid the opposition to scuttle the electoral process, with the two leaders saying that the courts were increasingly getting entangled in the attempts by NASA to delay the August 8 polls.

However, the leaders led by Siaya Senator James Orengo now say that the cases NASA has filed against IEBC are meant to ensure that the electoral body conducts a free and fair election, while exuding confidence that Kenyans will send away ‘a corrupt Jubilee administration’.

“We, NASA, are committed and ready for the August 8 election. I want to tell Jubilee that instead of complaining of our court cases they should be preparing themselves to go home come August 8 because people are fed up with their empty promises and corruption,” said Mr. Orengo.

According to Mr. Orengo, the opposition coalition is only interested in a free, fair and credible election and that is why they are seeking the intervention and interpretation of the courts whenever they feel that IEBC has disregarded the law in any decision.

Nevertheless, nominated MP Oburu Odinga advised President Kenyatta to provide sanity in Jubilee and stop attacking the Judiciary, a justice system that is independent.

Homa Bay County Women Representative, Gladys Wanga, said that President Kenyatta has already sensed defeat in the coming polls, terming his recent spat with the Judiciary as last kicks of dying horse.

“Uhuru and his government are in panic mode and that is why they are all over Raila, the Judiciary, Justice Odunga and Chief Justice David Maraga,” said Wanga.

Ugunja Legislator, Opiyo Wandayi, welcomed the court’s decision to cancel the ballot papers printing tender awarded to Dubai firm Al Ghurair, saying that the company to be re-awarded the Ksh 2.5 billion tender should be identified after consultation with all the political players.
