NASA enjoined in IEBC presidential vote tallying case

National Super Alliance (NASA) flag bearer Raila Odinga on Tuesday announced that the Opposition has been enjoined in the Court of Appeal case in which the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is seeking to reverse a High Court ruling on the tallying of presidential polls.

The High Court on April 4, 2017 ruled that presidential election results announced at the polling station and constituency levels will be final – a directive that the poll body wants reversed.

NASA has on two occasions vowed to sit out of the August 8 General Election if the IEBC succeeds in its bid to overturn the ruling.

With the latest pronouncement coming on May 14 during a political rally in Nakuru, Raila accused Jubilee Party of influencing the electoral body’s move with an aim of doctoring poll results.

Speaking to at his Capitol Hill office in Nairobi as he welcomed Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi back to ODM after his stint in Jubilee, Raila said that IEBC’s move is retrogressive.

He argued that the poll body’s bid to reverse the voter tally ruling would cancel out the strides that the country has made democratically, saying that the Opposition will not allow that to happen.

“How can IEBC seek to alter results from grassroots level yet they – the electoral body chair and commissioners – are situated in Nairobi? Which changes will they make yet they don’t know how people voted at county level?” questioned Raila questioned.

NASA is expected to hold its second rally since unveiling Raila Odinga as its presidential candidate and Kalonzo Musyoka as his running mate in Kisii town tomorrow, May 17.
