NASA, Jubilee MCAs defend Sakaja over Babu Owino release

A group of NASA and Jubilee MCAs have come out to defend Senator Johnson Sakaja from claims that he is an opposition sympathiser for bailing out Embakasi East MP Babu Owino from Parklands Police Station.

The county lawmakers were speaking a day after a section of Jubilee legislators led by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria accused Sakaja of being a Jubilee mole for securing the release of Babu Owino, who is an opposition lawmaker.

The Nairobi MCAs said Sakaja, a Jubilee legislator, made the undertaking as a national leader and not on political lines.

“Sakaja was stepping in as a national leader, he was not going to Parklands Police Station on party lines. As a youthful leader, he understands what innocent youth are going through,” said one of the NASA MCAs.

“Those condemning Sakaja should know he was elected by Nairobi residents who are from all the 42 tribes in Kenya. Sakaja was helping a Nairobi resident so let them give him a break,” added the Utalii Ward MCA Wilson Ocholla.

Earlier, a group of youth under the Bunge La Wananchi forum gathered at Uhuru Park to express support for Sakaja.

Babu Owino was arrested on Friday, January 19 following accusations of assaulting a parking attendant at an entertainment joint in Westlands, Nairobi on January 11.

He spent Friday and Saturday night in police cells after efforts by opposition leaders and University of Nairobi students to secure his freedom failed.

However, on Sunday, he was freed after Sakaja went to the police station and made an undertaking of Ksh.104,000 and a personal surety to produce him in court the next day.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, the two pleaded not guilty and were freed on a personal bond of Ksh.20,000 each.
