NASA leaders react to raid on Jimmy Wanjigi’s Muthaiga home

National Super Alliance leaders have described the raid on businessman Jimmy Wanjigi’s home as an act of intimidation by the government against individuals backing the opposition.

Addressing journalists outside Wanjigi’s home, Siaya Senator James Orengo faulted the police for conducting the raid, claiming that the Special Crimes Prevention Unit conducted the operation without a search warrant.

“We are told that the operation is in connection to a raid on a house in Malindi where some guns were found. Unfortunately, the police could not tell us whether or not they are sure the premises belong to Mr Wanjigi,” said Orengo.

Orengo, accompanied by former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, walked into the premises a few hours after news broke that flying squad detectives had stormed the businessman’s home.

However, the NASA leaders stated that they neither spoke nor see Wanjigi in the Muthaiga 44 apartment where at least 10 officers were holed up conducting the operation.

Muthama disclosed that they were kept at the reception area and were not allowed into the house, hence, they could not ascertain whether Wanjigi was present during the raid.

Junet Mohamed claimed that Jimmy Wanjigi, a powerful and wealthy man, was being “tormented and harassed” due to his association with the NASA coalition.

It is not yet clear why police raided the home but there were allegations that the operation was linked to a cache of guns recovered at a house in Malindi.

Police are yet to issue a statement on the dramatic raid.
