NASA now wants fresh Presidential election by August

Only a week after swearing in its leader Raila Odinga as the ‘People’s president’ the National Super Alliance is now changing tack, it is now seeking for a presidential election that it wants held in six months.

According to NASA, a new electoral regime should oversee the poll.

“Our goal is to see the process of forming people’s assemblies culminate in a presidential election and a new electoral regime no later than August 2018,” said Mr Ndii.

To achieve the single presidential election, NASA intends to push for a referendum that seeks to have a change in the government’s structure.

“We plan to convene the inaugural national convention at the end of February, we will take the resolutions of the National Convention to be validated by the people. We will be seeking to restructure the State and in this we will debate and resolve whether to share Executive authority between the president and prime minister,” said Ndii.

In their referendum push, NASA also intends to have changes to electoral laws as well as introduce implementation of police reforms and strengthen the judiciary.

In addition, the David Ndii-led team says it will also focus on devolved taxation to address the devolution question and how resources are shared among counties.

“At this point we have seen the crowding out of the counties by the national government borrowing overseas and using that money exclusively at the national level and we shall be looking at how to remedy that because the responsibility of paying that debt is shared nationally,” added Ndii.

But before rolling out the drive, the NASA quartet have been scheduled to tour Narok, Meru, Kisii, Wajir and Uasin Gishu counties to conclude the people’s assemblies forum within the next three weeks, before holding the national convention.
