NASA primaries methodology facing a tough test

Members of affiliate parties of the newly formed National Super Alliance (NASA) want the principals to outline the methodology to be used in conducting the primaries.

During the unveiling of the opposition outfit, NASA leaders; Raila Odinga, KalonzoMusyoka, MusaliaMudavadi, and Moses Wetangula, stated that the coalition will front joint candidates in competitive areas and allow individual parties conduct independent nominations in their strongholds.

Mombasa County gubernatorial aspirant on a Wiper Democratic Movement Party and also the Nyali Member of Parliament, Hezron Awiti, has opposed the idea of holding joint nominations in Mombasa County.

Awiti feared that a joint exercise would be prone to manipulation and, therefore, fail to prevent post-nomination fallout.

“We, in Wiper Party, will not agree to hold joint NASA nominations in Mombasa County. ODM will conduct their nominations and Wiper will have its own nominations,” said Awiti.

Awiti is facing a tough run for the Wiper ticket against Mombasa County Senator, Hassan Omar, in the gubernatorial race.

He has, however, rubbished claims that he is contemplating abandoning his bid in favour of Senator Omar.

The Nyali MP warned party leaders against inferring with the nomination exercise saying aspirants should be left to seek electorates’ support.

“Kalonzo Musyoka will not come to tell us this is our leader, we will not agree Raila Odinga to choose a leader for us, Weta (Moses Wetangula) will not come to gives us a leader. The people of Mombasa will choose their leaders,” insisted the Nyali MP.

Awiti was speaking at Majaoni, Mombasa, while seeking support of Mijikenda County elders.

The elders led by Ibrahim Nkai promised him their support on condition that he will be a one-term Governor.
