NASA rally at Jacaranda grounds illegal, says police boss

Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Koome now says that the National Super Alliance (NASA) rally planned for today (Sunday, November 12) at Jacaranda grounds in Embakasi East Constituency is illegal.

According to the police boss, NASA leaders had not given police a prior notice to provide security for the gathering, insisting that they are in contravention of the Public Order Act.

“The law states clearly that anybody who has intention to have a public gathering must notify the local OCS and tell him/her where you will have your meeting so that police can provide you with security. Why do you (NASA) want to break the law,” said Koome.

The opposition coalition has, however, insisted that it is ready to proceed with the planed rally, accusing the police of interfering with its activities.

NASA lawmakers are currently holding a consultation meeting at the Panari Hotel to plan on their strategy of the day, before heading to the Jacaranda grounds for their planned rally at around 2:30 pm.

It is still unclear whether the opposition will cancel the rally, which is set to skipped by NASA leader Raila Odinga who is out of the country on a trip to the US.
