NASA rejects Chebukati’s appeal to call off anti-IEBC demos
National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders have rejected an appeal by Independent Electoral and Boundaries commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati to call off their planned demos to allow joint talks with Jubilee Party leaders on Wednesday.
In a statement sent to newsrooms Monday evening, Chebukati had called on the opposition to temporarily halt their demos on Tuesday to enable the commission to address the concerns raised by various stakeholders, saying that the commission has put in place various measures in place to enhance the credibility of the repeat presidential election.
“The commission recognizes your inalienable right to picket and demonstrate The commission writes to request that you put off your planned protests to enable the joint consultative meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 27 to address concerns raised by the different stakeholders,” the statement read.
However, NASA maintains that the coalition’s co-principals will hold a peaceful demonstration as planned.
In a letter to Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Koome, NASA CEO Norman Magaya said that NASA leaders will lead a peaceful demonstration and push for the resignation of IEBC officials who it accuses of bungling the August 8 polls.
“We hereby notify you of the above peaceful demonstrations on Tuesday, September 26 on the stated date to express displeasure and call for the resignation of impugned IEBC officials, who are under investigation following the directive of the Director of Public Prosecutions dated September 23 ahead of the repeat presidential election,” Magaya says in the letter.
NASA wants IEBC CEO, Ezra Chiloba, Commissioner Abdi Guliye and several other officials hounded out of office and prosecuted ahead of the repeat presidential election.
The commission is expected to meet representatives of Jubilee and NASA representatives to iron out issues after a similar meeting with the two parties on September 12 aborted when Jubilee representatives failed to show up on time.
