NASA wants IEBC to remove dead voters from register

The Opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) is now demanding that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) carries out a thorough clean-up of the voter register.

Speaking in Mtito Andei in Kibwezi, Makueni County, NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate, Kalonzo Musyoka, said that the current register of voters has many errors that must be rectified before being made public or being used in the elections.

Kalonzo Musyoka called on the IEBC to do an in-depth clean-up of the register before the August 8 polls after completion of the audit by KPMG.

The leaders said that failure to clean the register may lead to dead voters participating in the election or those registered twice voting more than one time and this will ultimately affect the outcome of the elections.

On his part, Odinga urged residents of the larger Ukambani region to fully support NASA to ensure the opposition clinches the presidency in the forthcoming polls.

On Friday, June 9, an audit report by KPMG showed that over half a million Kenyans risk not participating in the August 8, 2017 General Election hundreds of thousands of anomalies were identified.

KPMG, which was awarded the tender to audit the voter register, handed over the report to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

According to the audit report, there are 92,277 dead voters in the register who need to be expunged from the list.

The report further showed that there are 264,242 cases of duplication where persons of voting age registered with similar Identification Card numbers but different names or same names but with different ID numbers.

KPMG recommended that such names be removed from the list 30 days from today (Friday, June 9, 2017) before it is made public and for usage in the August 8 polls.

Another 171,476 voters were also registered with invalid identity cards.
