NASA woos Vihiga residents, accuses Jubilee over election laws changes

The opposition coalition now says that its supporters will stage countrywide protests come Monday, October 2 against Jubilee’s proposed amendments to election laws and reforms in the electoral commission, terming the majority party’s decision as “changing the laws of a game midway to apply within the same game”.

The National Super Alliance (NASA) accused the government of wanting to change election laws just 25 days to the repeat presidential election to make sure that they cling to power, they say, against the will of the people. The opposition supremo, Raila Odinga, insists that they will not participate in the October 26 repeat poll unless Jubilee shelves their ambitions.

The proposed amendments to election laws could radically erode the powers of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairperson and dilute the importance of electronic transmission of results, with NASA now reading mischief in the latest move by Jubilee.

Speaking during a campaign rally in Vihiga County on Saturday, September 30, the former prime minister called upon his supporters to come in large numbers and vote for him.

“When we, NASA, presented evidence before the Supreme Court, the court was satisfied that Jubilee didn’t win the August elections. Now President Kenyatta is threatening to deal with the judges, but we are telling him before he does that, Kenyans will sent him home in the repeat presidential poll,” said Odinga.

The ODM Party leader promised that his government, if elected, will set aside special funds to help the elderly in the society, above the age of 65, single mothers and the youth. He also promised the Vihiga electorates an industrial park, which according to him, will be a game changer in creating jobs to the people, even as he remained adamant that the journey to Canaan was still on course.

In Vihiga County, the opposition leader whitewashed Jubilee’s President Kenyatta with 181,628 votes against 18,522. But disgruntled opposition figures from Western Kenya have been changing allegiance to the ruling administration promising to tilt the scales.

NASA are today expected to campaign in Mumias, Kakamega County.
