National Assembly begins hearing of petition to remove IEBC
The National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee has kicked off the hearing of a petition where a self-proclaimed governance consultant is demanding the removal of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In the sittings held at the Continental House in Nairobi on Tuesday, Barasa Kundu Nyukuri told the committee that he had resolved to file a petition at the National Assembly since it is the Constitution way to institute the removal of IEBC commissioners.
“Only a petition can institute the removal of IEBC commissioners from office. Other routes, including, Terms unconstitutional any other route of sending IEBC team home, including JLAC or joint select committee on IEBC,” he said.
Nyukuri said that IEBC is grossly incompetent and cannot be entrusted to hold a free and fair election in 2017.
“There are serious divisions within IEBC that were triggered by competing interest between former IEBC CEO James Oswago and the commission chair Issack Hassan.”
“The IEBC commissioners are always in office reading newspapers and taking tea. What’s their work? They are policy makers. They can’t make policies every day. That’s why most of them get interested in procurement .”
