National Bank admits hackers stole Ksh.29 million

The National Bank on Friday broke its silence regarding the hacking of its IT systems by fraudsters who reportedly made away with more than Ksh.150 million.

In a statement, the financial institution confirmed that its systems were breached adding that investigations have been launched.

“We can confirm that there was an attempted fraud in the course of business on January 17 but the bank’s monitoring and security resources frustrated the attempt,” the statement reads.

The statement further reads; “The amount of the attempted fraud is about Ksh.29 million and we have confidence that we will recover all the cash.”

The bank also dismissed social media reports as “incorrect speculation”.

On Friday, speculation was rife that more than Ksh.150 million had been stolen from the bank contrary to the institution’s position that only Ksh. 29 million had been robbed.
