Nchi iko na wenyewe? Maraga under fire after revelations of trouble at the Judiciary

Chief Justice David Maraga has alleged mistreatment and disrespect revealing that the judiciary may be under siege.

According to him, unnecessary budgetary cuts; the Mashujaa Day incident; denied access to the VIP lounge at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA); lack of protocol cars to carry his high ranking visitors; point to attempts to frustrate his office.

“I’m told that some CSs and PSs are bragging that the CJ will or should be removed before the end of this year. Really? Kumbe hii nchi iko na wenyewe. Some of us are serving at their pleasure. Let me tell them, the CJ is here exercising the mandate given to him by the Kenyan people. I’m not serving under the pleasure of CS or PS,” said Maraga on Monday.

“Why are they interested in our affairs? It is because they want to control the Judiciary. They want to make the Judiciary a puppet,” he added.

There was immediate criticism as a section of Kenyas questioned his priorities and legitimacy of his statements as others echoed his sentiments.

On Tuesday, the CJ’s press conference was still a hot topic on social media as debate ensued over the revelations of trouble at the Judiciary.

#DearCJMaraga everything you raised in yesterday’s address was IMPORTANT & FUNDAMENTAL for the independence & improvement of our justice system. Your examples may have been inappropriate, but the issues raised were too important to be reduced to those examples. Meet Uhuru & TALK,” David Osiany said.

“To start a hashtag by anonymous bots to attack Maraga with no actual facts is pure malice (kindly stop this nonsense) and give the judiciary the respect it deserves. Kenyans deserve better open honest government yet most people are missing the point that it’s not about the office holder but the office itself that’s being attacked, we have 3 pillars of Government the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. All three pillars are equal under the constitution.” said Raila Odinga Junior.

One Eugene Ongeri also wondered why Maraga was being attacked online: “CJ Maraga raised a lot of important issues that should be considered in order to save the whole judiciary and Kenya at large. It’s funny how some fake and idle tweeps have taken such points to be his own needs and the only thing they can remember is Mercedes. Sad.”
