NCPB To Purchase Maize At Ksh 2,200 Per Bag

This follows an order by President Uhuru Kenyatta directing NCPB to purchase the maize at that price.

The announcement of the price will come as a boost to farmers most of whom have been selling their maize at throw away price because NCPB had not started buying maize from them.

Some farmers are said to have sold their maize for as low as Ksh 1,000 per 90 kg bag.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei has said the NCPB will open its stores to buy maize from farmers as directed by the President.

Speaking in his office at Kilimo House, Koskei said that the government will compensate farmers by paying them Ksh 500 per bag for those who lost their produce due to bad weather.

Koskei has however urged millers to bring down the cost of maize due to reduced cost of electricity and other factors in the country.

The president issued the directive to NCPB on Monday to safeguard the interests of the maize farmer.
