Why Maendeleo ya Wanaume opposes Wa Muchomba on polygamy

Maendeleo ya Wanaume chairman Nderitu Njoka has criticised a recent call for Kenyans to embrace polygamy, saying the idea was theirs originally.

He becomes the second public figure to take on Kiambu Woman Rep. Gathoni wa Muchomba over her statement that has caused ripples in different quarters.

Though Mr. Njoka has in the past led calls for men to take on more than one wife, he was on Tuesday categorical that the Woman Rep. should not ride on their proposal just to remain relevant.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV‘s Swaleh Mdoe, the chairman said if wa Muchomba said a proposal for polygamy was made in 2014 and a Bill fronted in the National Assembly.

He then took a swipe at wa Muchomba saying: “She should tell us how many husbands she has so that we know where to start. We lead from the front.”

Mr. Njoka accused women of being at the forefront of cases of cheating in marriage (mpango wa kando) citing reports spearheaded by Maendeleo ya Wanaume: in every four families, one child was found to be illegitimate.

He further criticised current practices where dowry price is ‘exaggerated’ making it difficult for young men to marry.

“In 10 men 7 are potential husbands, while in women only 2 out of 10 are viable wives because of their love of money. Domestic violence due to disrespect by the in-laws because of dowry payment is also prevalent,” he said during the interview.
