Nema partners with Nyeri Count Govt to relocate mega dumpsite

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and Nyeri County Government have entered in to an agreement that will see Asian Quarters dumpsite moved to a scarcely populated area.

NEMA director Patrick Mungai said that they will ensure the dumpsite, which is the largest in Nyeri, is moved by March as it is a health hazard.

Speaking to the press, one landlord said that he was glad to hear the news as residents vacated properties adjacent to the dumpsite because of the bad odour , especially during the rainy season.

Street urchins, who scavenge in the dumpsite in search of food, urged the government to come up with a plan to resettle them saying they have nowhere else to go.

Area MP Esther Murugi vowed that no garbage will be dumped in that area once the dumpsite has been moved. She also added that the county government will need to dialogue with other constituencies, as some dump their waste in the area.
