15 people arrested for carrying plastic bags

Over 15 people have been arrested for being in possession of plastic bags in Kirinyaga County.

An officer from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) said anyone found using plastic bags will face fines of up to Ksh.1million or one-year imprisonment.

“A trader from Mwea has already been fined Ksh500,000 by the Wang’uru Law Courts,” Mr. Joseph Kopejo said.

He added that the crackdown is being conducted in all major towns including Kagio, Ngurubani, Kerugoya, and Ngurubani.

The official also issued a warning against people posing as NEMA employees and harassing local residents.

“We are currently chasing after these two impostors and when we find them we will take them to court. Anybody who introduces themselves as a NEMA official must have the right identification documents, ” he said.
