New boss at KNH almost two years after Lily Koros was suspended

Dr. Evanson Kamuri has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

He has been the acting CEO after Dr. Thomas Mutie, who had been selected by the KNH board of directors, was sent on terminal leave.

“Finally KNH has a substantive Chief Executive Officer. Congratulations Dr. Kamuri on your confirmation. Sasa tufanye kazi,” Dr. Thuranira Kaugiria from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) said on Twitter.

Dr. Kamuri takes over from Lily Koros who was suspended in March last year after a brain surgery incident on the wrong patient.

KMPDU was among parties that summoned all individuals linked to the surgery mix-up.

Koros and the KNH Board members were put on the spot against a backdrop of complaints from families of the patients involved in the mishap.

Koros, who has since been hired as Administration Secretary at the Health ministry, blamed the muddle on the alleged deviation of KNH from its core mandate.

She told the Parliamentary Health Committee that the referral facility apparently faced a shortage of 172 doctors and several nurses.

“There should be a cure of the system wholesomely for the institution to work effectively. The hospital, whose initial capacity was 1,300 patients, currently cares for 2400 in patients and sees another 2000 outpatients daily,” said Koros.

“The required ratio of nurses to patients is 1:6 but we have is 3:47,” she added.
