New HIV report links young women to older men

HIV infections among Kenyan women aged between 15-24 years has gone up by more than half, a new report has revealed.

According to the National Aids and STI Control Programme (NASCOP), HIV prevalence is high among male aged 35 -45 and women 15 -24 because of the relationship between the two.

“There is a lot of discussion right now to focus on the youth because we really having intense discussion on how to prevent new infections but also to figure out how those who are HIV infected access treatment and have good outcome,” Dr. Irene Mukoi said.

Currently, an estimated 1.5 million people in Kenya live with HIV and out of this number, youth account for 280,000.

“When you talk about new infections, these are people who are HIV negative today but tomorrow they are HIV positive…the increased numbers among the youth are worrying,” Anthony Chazara, LVCT Health, Youth Programme Officer said.

Charaza further indicated that out of the 50percent, adolescent girls and young women are at 21percent.

The report comes barely a week after First Lady Margaret Kenyatta sounded the alarm over rising numbers those infected with HIV.
