KCSE exam cheats to be deregistered on the spot

Learning institutions and candidates found engaging in exam irregularities during national examinations will be deregistered on the spot.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said on Monday that unlike in the past where unscrupulous candidates were allowed to complete the examination before the results were later be cancelled, this time round punishment will be meted out immediately.

“Any student or person who comes in contact with the examination, mainly the student, or doing anything that will compromise on the exam credibility, we shall deactivate them as candidates. We shall not wait for them to sit for the whole exam then cancel the results at the end of it,” said Dr. Kipsang.

Dr. Kipsang noted that an investigation was ongoing against a private school where exam managers were caught by officials from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) trying to open a mid-morning paper 30 minutes before the time set for the paper.

“If for sure it comes out that they attempted to access the exam earlier than the set time, these are some of the schools we shall deregister. We want to ensure that the integrity of this exam, just like last year, is maintained,” Kipsang warned.

The Education PS made these remarks on Monday in Kiambu County when he toured Senior Chief Koinange Girls Secondary School and Kanunga Boys High School to assess the progress of the ongoing KCSE examination.

He further warned schools against abetting any form of irregularities as such actions would see the institutions deregistered immediately.

He added that a number of students were being probed after they were found in possession of mobile phones during the exam period.

On Sunday, KNEC disclosed five cases of irregularities witnessed during the first week of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations that kicked off on Monday, November 6, 2017.

KNEC Chairman George Magoha said in one of the examination centres, KNEC officials nabbed exam managers who had attempted to open examination material before the scheduled time “with an intention of benefitting some candidates”.

Prof. Magoha confirmed that a female KCSE candidate at Nairobi’s Our Lady of Mercy Girls, Shauri Moyo and a male candidate at Furqan Integrated in Wajir County were set to be arraigned in court on Monday 13, 2017 after they were found with mobile phones.
