New School Rules not Welcome, Parents

KNAP Secretary General Musau Dunda said that some clauses in the Basic Education Regulation 2015 contravene the existing Education Act.

Dunda said parents object the implementation of the Basic Education Regulations 2015 adding that clauses that give the Cabinent Secretary powers over school heads flout the Basic Education Act and must be rejected.

He said the new regulations have no clear guidelines that spellout how public schools will be managed, and the elections of board members.

Dunda said the new act threatens education quality and standards in government schools noting that negotiations must be put in place to iron out the contentious issues.

He was addressing school heads and other education stakeholders drawn from Molo and Rongai in an event held at the Molo Secondary School in Molo.

The new Education Regulations have ruffled feathers in the education sector with the Kenya Union of Teachers (KNUT) threatening to call strike over its gazettement.

According to Knut, the new regulations give the education cabinet secretary powers to discipline teachers saying it is a move to “colonise teachers”.

“The CS for education should not play with fire,” warned KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion.

Kaimenyi has, however, defended the regulations saying the disciplinary responsibility still lies with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
