NGO Board boss Fazul Mahamed quits

Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) Coordination Board Chief Executive Officer Fazul Mahamed has resigned after three years in office.

Fazul, whose resignation takes effect from May 1, 2018, described his term as “nothing short of pure excitement and joy.”

“I wish to sincerely thank the board of directors for the invaluable opportunities extended and I commit to effective, expedient and smooth transition,” said Fazul in a letter to the board.

Fazul had his term at the board controversially extended after it had come to an end in November, 2017, leading to a lawsuit.

In the suit, Okiya Omattah faulted Interior CS Fred Matiang’i for failing to commence, by July 24 last year, the process of competitively re-appointing or replacing Mahamed.

According to Omtatah, the Interior Secretary ought to have sent Mahamed on terminal leave and appointed an acting CEO on or about 23rd June 2017 but failed to do so.

Following Omtatah’s suit, the Employment and Labour Relations Court directed the government not to renew Fazul’s term in office.
