NGO launches alternative healthcare kitty in Nyandarua County

A group in Nyandarua County has initiated an income generating program for low income earners to enable them raise money for their healthcare.

This will be an alternative after low income earners failed to sustain the recently increased National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) scheme by the government.

Majority of the group members earn below Kshs6, 000.

Through the Kadogo Economy Welfare Fund (KEWEF) Areca Daps organization, a non governmental organization working in Nyandarua, has helped the members start small income generating ventures.

At the end of every month, members will be contributing Kshs150 towards the health scheme as compared to NHIF members in the same economic level paying Kshs500 for their health insurance cover.

The money, according to the organisation’s Executive Director Michael Munene, will go towards assisting members who fall sick and who cannot raise money for their medical.

Munene said that members who are unable to pay their medical bills will be fully assisted through the kitty. Those requiring specialized treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital will benefit from fully paid for ambulance services.

Areca Daps has a membership of over 10,000 principal family heads and over 50,000 people who indirectly benefit from the NGO’s organization.

The group has also been contracted by the NHIF Board to recruit members to the health scheme, after the contribution was raised to Ksh500 for members earning less than Kshs6, 000.

On Friday, the organization launched several income-generating initiatives for low income earners to kick start the Kadogo Economy Welfare activities at Ndunyu Njeru trading Centre in Kinangop Constituency of Nyandarua County.
