NGOs warned against being used by politicians ahead of 2017 polls

Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) operating in Kenya have been told to be wary of politicians out to use them to advance their political ambitions.

Addressing the press in Garissa after a long day meeting with local NGOs, acting chairperson of the National Council of NGOs Samwel Githinji urged the organizations to abide by the code of conduct to avoid being misled by politicians.

Githinji said the Council will not allow rogue NGOs that fuelled the 2007/08 post election violence to operate under their auspices.

Githinji claimed that some NGOs were involved in the so called ‘fixing of ICC suspects’, procuring and coaching of witnesses.

He said the council had embarked to a countrywide campaign to ensure a peaceful general election next year.

The meeting was meant to seek views on necessary changes to the NGO constitution, to allow for the review of amendments that will come up a document that will govern the day to day running of the council.

The council’s board member Abdirahman Mohammed urged the CORD coalition to use the laid constitutional framework in their bid to have the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners removed from office.

Abdirahman said resorting to street protests was only meant to fuel political temperatures and set the stage for political violence.
