NHC To Develop 30,000 Housing Units

The corporation plans to develop 10,000 units for low income earners and another 20,000 units through joint ventures with land owners as well as County Governments.

NHC’s Managing Director, Wachira Njuguna speaking in Ruai where NHC is constructing 44police staff quarters using Expanded Polystyrene EPS panels said the corporation intends to use modern building technology to drive supply of the proposed housing stocks.

The project is part of the Police Reform Programme which aims to improve the welfare of security officers.

The Chairman of the Corporation, Sammy Chepkwony said that his plan for the corporation is to work with the government to improve on housing in the next 5 years.

Njuguna said the corporation has designed a low cost housing unit that can be built at a cost of Kshs 1 million.

NHC has also developed a ksh.5, 000 mortgage solution that targets low income earners.

The interest rates will be lower for this group who will be able to pay their loans over a period of 20 – 30 years.

The General Manager EPS Factory Andrew Saisi, said, “the Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) panels’ factory is expected to reduce construction periods as well as direct and indirect building costs.”

“It is also important to note that an EPS technology house is durable and can withstand environmental disasters like earthquakes,” Saisi said.

Saisi said the EPS Factory has an annual production capacity of 126,720 panels which translates to 460,800 square metre of construction materials annually.

NHC plays a principal role in the implementation of the Government’s Housing Policies and Programmes.

The Government plans to increase the supply of modern housing units in the period 2013- 2017 especially for the low-income segment of the market where supply lags behind demand.

The Corporation is focused on building decent affordable houses, through its various schemes such as: Tenant Purchase, Outright Sale, Rural and Peri-Urban Housing Loans and, Rental Housing.
