Night travel ban to be lifted, Transport PS says

Transport Principal Secretary Paul Maringa on Wednesday announced that the controversial night travel ban will be lifted selectively starting mid-February, 2018.

Speaking to the media at Parliament Buildings where he was appearing before the Parliamentary Transport Committee, Maringa however indicated that Matatus Sacco’s will have to fulfill certain conditions before the ban is lifted.

The PS further warned that companies reported to have been causing a lot of accidents will not be cleared even as the ministry awaits committee reports on compliance from the various transport players.

This comes a month after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended night travel for long distance public service vehicles, following the Migaa road accident that has claimed 36 lives.

In a statement to newsrooms, NTSA Director General Francis Meja said that all travel must be scheduled to take place between 6am and 7pm, a directive he said was to help address the upsurge of fatal crashes across the country.
