Nine confirmed dead in a grisly road accident in Gatundu

Nine people have been confirmed dead after a 14-seater public service vehicle plunged into River Nyakabai near Mataara Shopping Centre in Gatundu North, Kiambu County.

The fatal road accident occurred on Sunday, November 29, at 1a.m.

According to Traffic Commandant Jacinta Kinyua, the nine died on the spot while seven others were rushed to Thika Level 5 Hospital for urgent care.

Five survivors of the fatal accident were treated and discharged.

Reports indicate the driver lost control of the vehicle consequently plunging into River Nyakabai while it was making a turn in a sharp bend.

The victims are reported to have died as result of drowning.

All the fatalities hail from Kandara in Murang’a County. They were heading back home after attending a dowry payment ceremony which was held on Saturday in Nyahururu.

Rescue mission is underway in search of an infant who is still trapped in the matatu.

Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria has condoled with the families of the nine who perished in the accident.

Wa Iria says his county government will cater for funeral expenses of all the victims.
