Sophia Njeri, woman arrested for filming cops harassing passenger to be arraigned Friday

Sophia Njeri, the woman arrested for filming police officers harassing a passenger at Kasarani, Nairobi is set to be arraigned at the Makadara Law courts on Friday.

Sophia Njeri was arrested on Tuesday morning moments after recording the officers in a push-and-pull situation with a female passenger and is set to be charged with obstruction in Execution of Duty.

Lawyer John Lewis Onkedi of Onkendi Ombiro & Co. Advocates, through a tweet confirmed that he will be representing Njeri a case he picked up when Kenyans on Twitter, through #ReleaseNjeri demanded for her release.

“I can confirm that I will be representing Njeri on 8th Feb, at Makadara Courts on these and any other charges the prosecution will prefer against my client,” the lawyer tweeted.

Taking to Facebook on Tuesday morning, Njeri posted the 1:40-minute recording saying it had led to her arrest and that she was being taken to Kasarani Police Station.

Her plight led to the trending hashtag topic #ReleaseNjeri on Twitter with thousands of Kenyans online urging the National Police Service to intervene and secure her release.

The public, while condemning the officers for intimidating citizens, further agitated for their arrest and subsequent prosecution.
