Njuri Ncheke elders adopts new constitution, dissolve council

Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders have adopted a new constitution which outlines a new organizational structure with clearly defined roles in a bit to stamp out leadership wrangles in the group.

Speaking at the Njuri Ncheke Shrine in Nchiru, Meru County, one of the elders, Francis Muthaura, said that the elders have endorsed the constitution after four years of intense negotiation.

In accordance with the new constitution, the council will be dissolved and fresh elections will be held after 90 days, following village-level nominations.

Muthaura said that the current Chairman and Secretary General will retain office for the next three months as the election process continues.

“The current leaders, Linus Kathela (Chairman) and Secretary Genral Josphat Murangiri will complete their term after the 90 days, and they are free to contest for their positions if they so wish to be elected to the same positions,” said Muthaura

The meeting, which was attended most Meru leaders, ended with a call for unity.
