Nkaissery issues stern warning against violence in party primaries

The government has now issued a stern warning to perpetrators of violence in the ongoing party primaries countrywide.

Speaking to the media, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery indicated that the national government would now be directly involved in party primaries following violent disruptions that have been witnessed in the ongoing exercise across the country.

The Interior CS listed Nakuru, Kiambu, Murang’a, Homa Bay, Mombasa, Migori and Busia counties as possible poll chaos hot-spots, further warning of stern action against violence saying that security agencies were on standby.

Nkaissery also highlighted claims that police officers were favouring some candidates by denying agents of some candidates access to polling stations.

Quoting a case in Nyandarua County where a police officer was arrested after he was found acting as a presiding officer, Nkaissery said that the National Police Service are investigating these claims with a view of taking disciplinary action against those involved.

The CS further noted that police had arrested 17 people after supporters of a candidate from the opposition Orange Democratic Movement attacked officials preparing the party’s county-level primary vote over the weekend in Migori County.

The Interior CS further cited another case in Nakuru County where three supporters of an aspiring politician were arrested with crude weapons and were awaiting arraignment.
