Nkaissery: Join fight against illicit brew

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has asked county governments to join hands with the National Government to fight the illicit brew menace.

Nkaissery said only Nyandarua County has demonstrated real commitment in the war ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Nkaissery warned county commissioner and the provincial administration that they would be fired if they fail to deal firmly with those brewing dangerous liquor.

The cabinet secretary said samples of the confiscated second generation brews will be taken to government chemists for analysis.

Nkaissery has directed NACADA and other relevant bodies to finalize tests on illicit brews nabbed in the ongoing campaign before action is taken based on their toxicity levels.

During a meeting with ministry staff at Harambee House Thursday morning, Nkaissery warned government will go after all manufacturers, suppliers and seller of any drink that will result in death or hospitalization.

The CS added those found culpable will be charged with murder or attempted murder and compensate families of those affected by such killer brews as provided in the law.

The government has already sacked 99 chiefs and sub chiefs and 15 police officers for allegedly aiding production and sale of illicit brew.

20,000 suspects have also been arrested since the presidential declaration on the war against illicit brew was made.

Nkaissery had earlier announced that over 16 million liters of illicit brew and hundreds of illegal drinking dens have been destroyed since the war on illicit brew started two weeks ago.
